Unions Otago media release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday 1 December 2011

Dunedin workers will be joining a national action this Saturday 3 December with a picket outside the McDonalds George Street outlet, 232 George Street, Dunedin from 10.00am to 11.00am.

The protest is to support locked out meat workers whose company supplies McDonalds. Fundraising and informational pickets are being organised outside McDonalds sites nationwide as McDonalds is a major customer of ANZCO.

ANZCO locked out 100 meat workers at their CMP Rangitikei plant on October 19 for refusing to accept up to 20% pay cuts, shift changes and cuts in allowances.

Workers around the country are offering solidarity, moral and fundraising support and help to put pressure on the company management, says one of the organizers of the Dunedin event, Malcolm Deans.

Unions Otago Convenor Glenda Alexander says that the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions are actively backing the meat workers and local unions will be supporting the Dunedin action.

Locked out worker Steve McGinity told the Manawatu Standard: “We’re not just doing this for our kids, we’re doing it for all meat workers and for all Kiwis who are facing attacks on their work rights.”
