Press Release: Interfaith Council to Welcome Dalai Lama to Dunedin
The Dunedin Interfaith Council will host the first public event of the Dalai Lama’s visit to Dunedin on June 11th on the steps of St Pauls Anglican Cathedral in the Octagon.
The Dunedin Interfaith Council, whose members collectively represent a wide range of faiths and religious traditions active in the Dunedin area, will present His Holiness with a special welcome card inscribed with the names and faiths of those attending during a brief informal gathering at 9am.
Council Secretary Suzanne Gillies says “after writing to seek a formal audience with the Dalai Lama to discuss interfaith matters the Dunedin Interfaith Council was delighted to be granted this historic opportunity to meet with His Holiness at the start of his Dunedin visit.”
Trust spokesperson Neil Cameron said “given the strong public interest in His Holiness’s visit it seemed appropriate to balance the civic welcome from Councillor Jinty McTavish with a public welcome by the Interfaith Council on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral on the Octagon.”
Dame Sukhi Turner, will introduce the Dalai Lama at the Town Hall where the he will speak on the topic of Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World at 12.30pm
